How does eBay bidding work?

An interesting option for automatic bidding would be - in auctions where one is outbid by less than the bid increment, another automatic bid is placed, to give a second chance of winning the auction.

I have lost a few auctions by less than the bid increment and would have chosen the option of having a 2nd bid placed to win the auction.

An example of this option is for an item where my maximum (automatic) bid is $10. If it becomes the 2nd highest bid and the current price is between $10 and $10.49, another automatic bid is placed for the bid increment amount over the current price.

Another argument that has been discussed many times before.

My take on this has always been, and remains, if you want that option you are not currently entering snipes at the true maximum you are prepared to pay.

I'm annoyed that I've lost out on bidding for an iPhone. My maximum bid entered in Gixen was ?GBP 341. It sold for ?GBP 320. Ebay's buyer fees added ?GBP 13.12 making ?GBP 333.12. Did Gixen actually submit my bid, or did it wrongly think it included buyer's fees and wasn't enough of an increment?
