This my first experience with sniping. I have already placed a "maximum bid" with ebay. If my maximum bid wins the auction. Will the snipe outbid me and raise my price of the item?

So long as your snipe bid amount is both higher than your maximum bid as well as being more than one bid increment more than he auction price when the bid is to be placed, you will be fine.

The way that Ebay works having the two highest bids does not mean that you pay more than having just one.

Gixen is implemented as it is, to provide you with an advantage to your bidding and not to put you at any disadvantage over how Ebay bidding works internally.
