Could you please explain:

EBAY ERROR: LOGIN TIMEOUT (1)

I bid on 3 items which I would have won had this error not happened.

Thanks

It seems that eBay is having a major issue in the past few hours. I am unable to log in manually as well.

I can't log in either. I get the message:

Safari can’t open the page.

Safari can’t open the page “htt*ps://signin.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?co_partnerId=2&siteid=0&UsingSSL=1” because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection. This sometimes occurs when the server is busy. Wait for a few minutes, and then try again.

I wonder if they were hacked again. I'm curious what Ebay's procedure is for auctions ending during such times?

I don't think eBay care about what happens to those listings during their problems, the sellers must lose out by many pounds, I know that the items I tried to bid on went for half of their normal value. It's incredibly frustrating when it is something you have been after for a while.

If sellers complain I think Ebay sometimes apologise and offer a refund on listing fees... but they have to complain directly first... small compensation for both buyers and sellers...

As already said many items are going for very low prices at the moment which is of far greater concern to sellers than the relatively small listing fees... I have never known Ebay cancel a listing after the sale... at least not for the reason that the site was not functioning properly... occasionally they do if they receive evidence of wrongdoing by the seller but that is a very different issue.

I don't remember when was the last time I saw an ebay outage last this long. It started around 03:20 AM PDT this morning, and it's been almost 5 hours already since then, and still going. Maybe an update that went very wrong.

In case anyone wonders, I don't see a single snipe going through.

Ebay must have so many servers and so much built in redundancy I don't understand how the site can be down for so long. Don't they have servers that can take over in different parts of the world. How can a site that large with so many resources just be offline for this period of time? They must have contingency plans for such an event - no?

If it is an Ebay update it was most likely to the logging in process for Ebay... I am still logged on in my browser and the uk site functions OK, but does have some issues...

It is not possible for me to log in via a different browser though... or to any other Ebay sites.

It is logical to think so... but they have so many computers servicing the site I believe it would be prohibitive for them to have hot standby machines for all circumstances... they would effectively need twice as many computers as they usually need in order to do that... the cost would be high, even for a large multinational like Ebay.

Anyway, it might not be within their control... Ebay is dependant on the internet to service it's needs.. the last time Ebay had an outage it was nothing to do with their own machines but was a major routing capacity issue on the internet.

***Technical Issue Impacts Some eBay Customers***

We are aware that some users may experience problems when using the eBay Site. We are actively working on restoring the issue and apologize for any inconvenience caused.

As far as I can tell it is pretty much all users that have tried to log in to Ebay worldwide in the past 6 hours, so why they are understating the issue I don't know.

I can see that some snipes starting going through (more than half still failing), so it looks the issue is being resolved.

Things are back to normal now, I no longer see either bid or login failures.

cocobeloeil,

At what time did your snipe complete?...

The issues are only just subsiding in the last 20 minutes.

When you say "just", when exactly? This problem has been resolved for good 9 or 10 hours already.
