max bid won when lower bid should

The Item # is 181037208278 I put in a bid almost 4x the current bid with only 18mins left. I can understand being outbid or out sniped also winning with a lower bid but to win with my exact high bid does not make any sense. It's like ebay only accepts the high bid and does not default to the next bid over the current one

Look at the bid history - the second highest bid was less than a bid increment less than your maximum bid. It's completely normal that you won with your highest amount.

In fact, had you bid even more up to full increment higher than the second highest bid you would have won with even higher amount.

The second highest bidder decided that they were willing to pay US $35.99, but the auction price would only have been US $9.99 before your bid was placed by Gixen as you had indicated that it should and outbid them... on the bid history page you can select the 'Show automatic bids' link to confirm that this was the case.

There is another scenario (which did not happen), if someone else had placed a bid of $35.98, 7 seconds before the auction ended (i.e. before yours was placed by Gixen), then the bidder of $35.99 would have won and your bid would have been rejected by ebay due to the bid increment rule. Since that did not happen at least you won at what you were willing to pay and someone else didn't get it for less... so it could have been worse (unless US $36.55 was more than you were willing to pay... but you wouldn't have associated a maximum bid with a snipe that was more than you were willing to pay... would you?).
