Laurent, it is - I am looking into this. A while ago ebay had an issue when bid increments were not properly used. I am not sure if this happens again or not. I'll turn some logging on to check if there any such similar occurrence happens.

Thanks, Mario, for your help.
Sure, Gixen has a good abacus...
However you could do something for me and that could help you to find the cause. Could you tell me whether that is a very rare incident (your approximate frequency rate).

Thanks

Something like this is very rare - I almost never have to turn on additional logging to see what happened. I think it's an only such occurrence in months.

Failures in general, however, which includes timeouts, network errors, etc, they all happen - and incidence of all this combined varies, but is always less than 1 in 200. That's for the free service, mirror is almost guaranteed to work, absent ebay issues.

I don't know what is causing this (that http bad request is actually received back from ebay), but since it happened twice to you, it must be related to your account. I don't see this happening across the board. If this is account related, mirror wouldn't help. I'll look further into this.

cmirceac, my apologies, it seems that this is across the board. Looking into it.

Hi Mario,

I just had the same problem as the original poster to this thread.

Tried to place a bid on item #320843335749.
My bid - 80 pounds
Status - BID UNDER ASKING PRICE
Item sold for 79.77 pounds
No bid attempt made by Gixen.

Appreciate your support in working out what's wrong.

Thanks,
Bill

Bill, this is not the same problem - your bid was not accepted due to ebay bid increments. It's not enough that your bid is higher, it has to be higher for a certain increment.

Hi Mario,

I get it - thanks for clearing that up. The error message is a little misleading...

Thanks,
Bill

'BID UNDER ASKING PRICE' is what people are used to in this situation so it probably would not be a good idea to change it now, what would be your suggestion, perhaps 'BID BELOW REQUIRED PRICE'?

I would be reluctant to change it now... Historically, I think eBay called it "asking price" on the bid submission page, hence the name.

Mario:

I think this is a system problem not an account problem. I tried to bid on a number of items which all failed. A number were under the asking price but these others weren't.

190634976224 UNKNOWN ERROR (3)
400274046346 NETWORK ERROR
190633425154 BID UNDER ASKING PRICE *
190633948125 UNKNOWN ERROR (3)
400274223411 UNKNOWN ERROR (3)
200706477167 UNKNOWN ERROR (3)
400274214637 UNKNOWN ERROR (3)
* the incriment is .25 and I was .49 above the winning bid

The error explanation prompt by ebay seems to suggest that the bid is being entered then ebay is waiting for SUBMIT BID confirmation.

5419robin, I actually confirmed above that there was an issue of some kind with requests being sent from the main facility, and this was across multiple servers. I am not sure what caused it, as there were no software updates being applied at the time. I suspect it was a networking issue. The issue is gone now.

Hi Mario,

Interestingly, before bidding, I anderstood that the general failures arrived less than 1 in 200 (do that mean an incidence of 1 in 1000 or 1 in 10000?) if we use your free service.
Howether, this incidence is much better If we use your paying service.

Thank you for your expertise.
Laurent

So, may be I was wrong with what I thougth.

Laurent,

You are correct that the headline figure for single server (free) Gixen service is around 1 in 200 fail, whether this issue alone increases that incidence rate I doubt since Gixen deals with so many snipes these days, you can see the number of scheduled snipes on the front page.

From what Mario has written here it would appear that this issue affected the free service (main server) facility only so anyone using the mirror service us very unlikely to have been affected at all.

Roughly you can multiply the likelihood of a single server failure by itself to get the projected possibility of Mirror failures, so 1 in 200x200 = 40,000 but in practice it is likely to be much better even than that since incidents such as this go towards producing the figure of 1 on 200 and the likelihood of them happening to 2 servers hosted by different facilities, at the same time, is very remote indeed.
