today gixen failed for two of my snipes: 111919842886 and 131739389948 (only/winning bid 5, my max bid 18, not mirrored)
EBAY ERROR: LOGIN TIMEOUT (1)
were there any known issues with gixen or ebay today? would mirroring have helped in this case?
I wonder if it would have made sense to do a quick check for ebay login when the new items are added to the snipe list? for example, in this case I've added the items only a short time (few minutes) before the end of the auction, so presumably the problem was already there.
one could do something about it if alerted in advance, maybe bid manually, reset password, etc., but when the snipe fails in the last seconds, there is of course no time to react.
this would presumably also help if ebay changes authorization mechanism, or with password issues..
thank you for the great service! |

The best safeguard against this sort of failure is to have a Mirror subscription... it costs $6 per year. _________________ Mark |

exactly -- this was my question:
would mirror subscription help in this case, or was it some issue with ebay, so the error would still have occured from anywhere?
I've experienced a similar error sometime ago, when ebay forced me to change password, so presumably in that case it would not matter if the request came from mirror server or not. but if there was another check when the snipes are added, the problem would have been recognized immediately, and not after the bidding has ended.
thanks! |

I don't think that, realistically, there is any more checking that could be added to the free service, without making things worse for all the users rather than better. _________________ Mark |

When you are dealing with a very tiny window of a matter of seconds to complete a process on the internet.. poop can happen. I think Mario has said before that about 1 in 300 snipes performed without the mirror service can and do fail for various internet related reasons. Other snipe services aren't immune to occasional timeout failures either - unless they have redundancy. To get that redundancy with gixen the charge is only $6.00 a year for the mirror service.
I'm not a high volume bidder. Regardless I have seen that login timeout error happen once on the main server, but the bid was placed successfully by the mirror server. If you want that added insurance the cost is minimal to get it. |
