Re item 261896828424.
I am very disappointed that my Gixen bid, TWICE that that won the auction, was not placed and the message 'verification code required by eBay, could not log in' shows.
My log-in is the same as always, so why did Gixen not place my bid? |

I think it is likely to have been some temporary action taken by Ebay against the Gixen Main server.
Was the snipe Mirrored, and if so, what status was given on the Mirror tab? _________________ Mark |

No, not mirrored (but then I read this is not mandatory) so my faith in relying on Gixen is now seriously damaged, and any future use/bids/reliance questioned.... |

Imagine Tony that ebay decided to make these "changes" on what is probably the most profitable and busiest day of the week for them...Sunday. Yep I guess a huge company like ebay got to where they are by making stupid decisions. Hmmm really makes you wonder what the REAL problem is |

There were definitely some problems today, whether intentional or not. I attributed them to UI changes, and there were indeed some UI changes since the last time I looked at it. However I am no longer convinced this was the reason.
As I was doing some code changes in order to figure out what's causing these, the problems stopped on their own. My best guess is that whatever was causing this was fixed on ebay's side.
Note that both mirror and main servers were equally affected by this, though it's possible mirror helped some users, as only portion of snipes were failing, not all of them. |

I have the same issue today. I had left bids on 5 items that I wanted. None of the bids was placed. I would have won all 5 of them as my bids were 5 times higher than the final price the item sold for. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! |

Around 20 of my snipes failed today I probably would've won about 10 of those. A couple ended $20 below my snipes. Ebay is NOT making these changes regardless of what you hear on here. Not on a Sunday at least. Ebay is not that stupid. In my category Sunday is by far the favorite day of the week for sellers to have their listings end and I know it's not a freakish category for that practice. I'm sure other categories on ebay also have tons ending on Sundays. So this is just another attempt by gixen to get some premium subscriptions. Probably the most desperate attempt since I've been using them. These glitches never happened on a Sunday before that I can remember |

If they had warned me this was going to happen, I would have probbaly paid my $6.
Now I do not think I will continue using them at all! |

Here's the thing...I certainly don't trust them to tell the truth. They like everybody else are looking out for old #1. Some can do it the honest, right way while others can't. So even if I were to get the mirror service would that REALLY prevent this kind of thing from happening? Who knows and I certainly wouldn't believe what they tell me. The only thing you can be sure of is that they've got their money |

I think I was already clear that mirror most likely would not help with today's issue. I think I was also clear several times in the past that Gixen does much better with happy users than unhappy users, and is not a cash cow anyway in the best of times.
And how did you only come up with an idea that problems such as ones Gixen faced today result in flood of subscription payments? They don't. Not at all. Unhappy users are much more likely to turn to another service or give up sniping completely than to subscribe. |

I have to agree with that.
Well, I will then keep on using Gixen. Hopefully it works next time.
I will also pay my $6, even if it doesn't help with such issues.
Too bad I missed my 5 lots of Dutch Antilles stamps that I will never see again. They sold for a pittance. |

julesjelev,
I am sincerely sorry about your lost auctions. Over the next several days I will be looking into this event to try to get answers as to why this happened, what is the likelyhood it will happen again, and how to avoid it. |

Same thing here.
Last bid okay - May 31, 2015 , 3:14PM EST
1st Problem at - May 31, 2015 , 3:17PM EST
Continued through - May 31, 2015 , 4:29PM EST
Started bid okay again - May 31, 2015 , 4:59PM EST
I don't consider BID UNDER ASKING PRICE bid attempts
Had a chance to win on 2 (which sold for less than my bid) - more likely only 1 which went for 1/2 my bid. Not earth shattering, but annoying. |

If it is an Ebay related issue, the other sniping services would have failed today too. Did they?
If it is a Gixen issue, it is possible it was a technical glitch, not a premeditated action. So I will try to forget my 5 lots as quickly as I can. Hopefully after the next 3 beers.... |

I do not know, but not necessarily - sniping services work by web scraping. Different implementations may be more or less resistant to particular UI changes. Also, the particular problem of eBay inserting captcha images (verifications codes) can be triggered, and is certainly influenced by volume of snipes coming from a single address.
There wasn't a Gixen glitch, no recent software changes were made, and there were no hardware or network issues - when that happens I say so, even when I am personally at fault. |

Whether it was a Gixen or Ebay issue still has to be conclusively established by further investigation... That could take some time to establish.
I think we have to agree that it was not an issue that was engineered by Mario, in order to raise funds, for the reasons he clearly states that would be totally counter productive, especially if the issue is also manifest on the Mirror server.
I have no idea, at this stage whether other services were also affected, from experience I would say that it is likely that they were... However, it is also possible that the issue was caused by Ebay but associated only with some IP addresses, those at Gixen included, or that there is something unique to the Gixen implementation that triggered the event... Which is why Mario has launched the investigation to try to find the answers to these questions. _________________ Mark |

This is the first time in the many years that I've used gixen that a bid of mine didn't go through. Overall, I've had great results with gixen at such a great price. I've really appreciated your service. I hope that the problems this weekend was just a weird snafu. I've just renewed my membership. Thanks again. |

I had 2 items (out of +/- 20) that showed 'verification code required by eBay' but mirror still won those 2 items for me.
So no problems here!
With gixen I think in 1 month I have won more items then I would win in 1 year without gixen.
Happy customer here! |

I come back to my original posting.
I do not use eBay very often and used Gixen this time as I was unable to be at a computer when the auction was ending. The item was rare, from 1914, and most unlikely to be available again. Therefore, I am extremely disappointed as my bid, at more than twice the winning one, I feel confident would have very likely won the item concerned. I relied on Gixen, and that was my mistake. Just be warned, that if you require something that much, do not rely on others. |

tonypym,
I hear your pain... but let us not loose our sense of perspective here, no-one died or were even slightly (physically) hurt.
If you have positive suggestions as to what could have been done better, or that could prevent it happening again, I am sure we would all be very happy to hear them. _________________ Mark |
