Any way to just out-bid previous bid?

Say there's an auction ongoing and the current price is 80, and it's due in 3 days. Is there a way for me to just out-bid the next highest bid - say, in a couple days' time, the bid gets to 85. But I wouldn't know that now; how do I set it such that I bid 86 (or just above the highest bid) right before the auction ends?

It is unusual for it to be possible for you to know what the highest bid actually is at any one time.

The auction price that Ebay shows is only ever at most one bid increment more than the second highest bid, the actual amount of that bid could be much higher.

So your request wouldn't really help you win any more auctions.

The best strategy is to work out what the maximum amount is that you are willing to pay for the item and set that as your snipe amount. That way you still only pay at most one increment more than the next highest bidder even if you were willing to pay much more.

Understood. I didn't know eBay worked like that. Thank you for the explanation Smile

I have another question: Is it possible to out-bid myself? Say I place a current bid at 80, but to be safe, I use Gixen to snipe at 85. If someone out-bids me at 81, then sure, Gixen helps me to snipe the item. But if I remain the highest bidder at 80, will Gixen detect this and fail to place a higher bid at 81, or will it cause me to out-bid myself?

Sorry for having so many questions!

Can't edit my post, so sorry for double posting.

I read up a bit on eBay, and I think I better understand how it works.

My question now is - can Gixen help me double bid? In simpler terms:
Previous bid: 80
My maximum bid (via eBay, already bid): 85
Current bid (mine): 81
My bid (via Gixen, just to play safe): 90

Can I do that? Will Gixen fail to bid for my item because I'd already placed one via eBay prior, or will it just change my maximum bid price from 85 to 90 at the last minute?[/b]

This will change your maximum bid, but not the price you end up paying (unless there are other bidders that raise it). As long as you use the same username on both ebay and Gixen you can never bid against yourself.

The real question here is why you would place the earlier bid.

The whole point of sniping is to prevent other bidders from reacting to your bids, so the 3 basic rules are (1) only bid once per auction, (2) bid the maximum that you would be happy paying for that item, and (3) bid as late as possible.

(There are occasionally reasons for placing an early bid - such as BIN stomping - but if you use those, you'll understand why you use them.)
