Odd question, but...

If there is an item listed on eBay that I simply MUST have, what would happen if I entered a 'silly' over the top max bid?

Appart from someone else doing the same thing, would I ever end up actually paying that much, or would it simply outbid by the minimum amount?

You would pay whatever the second highest bidder's maximum is + bid increment.
