Is there any work being done with regards to the users changing the default colors to one of their choosing? I think it would kind of be cool to have the ability to change to darker (black/orange/blue) color schemes.

No, and I don't think I'll be spending too much time "beautifying" Gixen... It doesn't make any business sense at this point, as I doubt it would attract or turn users away to other services... and it would cost a lot of time, effort and/or money to do it.
