Question on my maximum bid

The current bid price is $50 and I set my maximum to $72. No one has since bid when the bot makes my bid will it make it closer to $50 instead of my maximum? And is the maximum supposed to just be max money I would bid if it got that high?

Sorry if this was worded confusing, just want make sure bot bids cheapest amount instead of my maximum I set.
