I won, but Gixen thinks I hadn't

I was sniping an item. Received a messages from Gixen:

I was confused, as my maximum bid was a lot higher than it sold for, so went to look on Ebay. Seems, I AM the winner! I was not bidding any other way, so the bid I won with was placed by Gixen.

I am happy with the result, but am very confused. How did this happen?
