More recently Ebay seem to have introduced checks as to whether you have moved a large distance from where you usually log on to their site and introduced verification screens when they detect a large movement.
They have never been entirely consistent with their introduction of such processes and, for obvious reasons, don't ever disclose the details of the algorithms that they use to decide whether or not to introduce controls to any particular account... I suspect the algorithms are themselves dynamic since Ebay recognise that any fixed criteria will always result in a certain proportion of false positives, and if those false positives become too prevalent then they tend to start annoying their good customers. This may be why you occasionally get the issue but not always.
If you find your bids are consistently getting blocked then it may be worth emailing Mario as, in that case, he may be able to help with off-line advice and actions that may enable you to reduce the occurrence of blocks like the Captcha images.
