What Gixen does is submit the bid that you specify in the last few seconds of the auction, it is Ebay that then works out, based on all the bids placed and the auction properties which bid is the winner and what price they have to pay.
So, given that the bid increment in that range is $1 your question should really be re-phrased:
'Why did Ebay work out that I need to pay $49.99 when the next highest bidder only bid a maximum of $48'
I think it is most likely that the seller had paid for a reserve of $49.99 so, in this case, you were not only bidding against other buyers but also against the minimum that the seller was willing to sell for.
I think you should be able to confirm that if you ask the seller.. if that was not the case then please come back and explain and I'm sure another plausible explanation can be found.

Post subject: Confused at Gixen's final bid
Re: Item I.D. - 321277059178
I don't understand my gixen-created final bid. Previous highest bid was $48.00, but gixen.com bid $49.99! (Shouldn't gixen-generated bid have been just $49.00?)
