Post subject: Thanks for the warning
...and to just buy it now if that's what your wiling to pay for it? Just a thought. I can see a snipe of less than the buy it now, or if there's already a bid negating the buy it now option.... Conversly I see how this can easily be done if the bidder was hoping to get it for less than the buy it now price, so I'll be careful to either buy it now or place a bid below that price. Thanks for the warning.

That's right, but unfortunately if the Buy It Now option is still there when Gixen comes to place the snipe then any bid that is for that amount or more is rejected by eBay.
So it is advisable to always set a snipe bid amount below the Buy It Now price.

I'm a newbie, so bear with me.
If I understand this correctly, the buy it now price was 40.
Placing a snipe bid of 40 would bid 40.00 at the last moment, regardless of other bids.
If a person was willing to pay up to 40, why not just buy it now?
Am I missing something? There would be no point in sniping at the buy it now price correct?
oops, never mind. I just thought it through. A snipe bid of 40 doesn't mean you actually pay 40, it just BIDS 40, and Ebay does the increment thing....... Duh.

eBay rejects bids that it regards are better handled by the Buy It Now process.
Gixen, as a sniping service, uses the auction bidding technique to place bids, but in this case eBay rejected your bid because there was still a Buy It Now option on the auction of that amount.
Gixen is supposed to warn you about this when you place a snipe here, if this is not the case and you can find another example, that is still open to bids, where it does not provide a warning please can you provide the auction id and Mario will, I'm sure, fix it so that a warning is produced.
Yes, had your bid been less than $40.00 in this case your bid would have been accepted and you would have won it at the starting price of $29.99.

Post subject: "BID ABOVE BUY IT NOW PRICE"
I placed a bid of $40.00 on this item 160684648436
Starting bid was $29.99. Buy it now price was $40.00.
I placed a snipe bid of $40.00 (my maximum I wanted to spend)
The auction ended, no bids and I didn't get it. The Gixen message said "BID ABOVE BUY IT NOW PRICE" What?!?
Did it show me that message when I placed the bid and not see it, or did the message appear after the auction ended? (Which is what I *think* happened)
Had I just entered $29.99 through the "normal" ebay bid process, and nobody else bid, wouldn't I have won the irem for $29.99?
