I see several recent threads about eBay authorization expiration, and I had no problem renewing mine today - but I found out only by accident, and would have missed a snipe otherwise.
Here's the situation: I placed a snipe using the browser add-on a few days ago for an auction ending today. I did not get an expiration alert at that time. Today, purely by chance, I noticed that the auction had only fourteen minutes to run, and decided to increase the snipe amount. When I logged onto the Gixen site to do this I got the expiration alert, and had to hustle to do the re-authorization before the auction ended.
If there is an existing snipe, is there any way to get an alert by email as soon as the authorization expires?

I presume that your authorisation actually ran out after your existing snipe was due to complete?

In that case you would have been alright without renewing it... It is only auctions that end after the authorisation runs out that you need to worry about... this is why it only starts warning you when you get within 10 days of expiration of the authorisation.

This is because 10 days is generally the longest auction duration you can have on Ebay (though, as an aside, the Polish seem to have been an exception to this with 13 days on their local site, no idea why) so the maximum time before an auction ends that you can schedule snipes is 10 days.

No, when I checked the snipe fourteen minutes before the end of the auction, Gixen showed me the already expired message. I took that to mean that the bid would not be placed if I didn't renew the authorization.

And I wonder if Gixen placed the bid or not - I just checked the eBay bid history, and it only shows the one bid I placed manually just before the end of the auction, as a precaution. Usually I see two bids from my ID, one from Gixen main and one from the mirror.

Here's the eBay auction ID if you can check further: 113583608857
An earlier auction I won, for comparison: 123546589286

What was the status that Gixen gave the snipe where a bid was not placed?

Because of the way the software is implemented, I don't think it is possible for Gixen to get to that status without first successfully placing a bid.

Yes, that sounds reasonable. I was just puzzled that eBay doesn't show the usual two bids from Gixen, as well as the manual bid I placed at about the same time the snipe was scheduled.
It's obviously a difficult thing to test, as it requires the authorization to expire between placing the snipe and the end of the auction, and as this won't come up again for eighteen months, I'm not too concerned about it.

Thanks for your responses, Mark.

Seeing two bids from Gixen is the exception rather than the rule. In order for that to happen the two bids sent from Gixen (from the main server and from the mirror server) must arrive within a second of each other; otherwise, eBay will reject the later bid since it isn't bigger than the earlier arriving bid. It is unusual (although not exceptionally rare) for the time of arrival of the two bids to differ by less than a second.

As it happens, I won an item on eBay Italy this morning (I'm in the USA), and it does show only one bid. I did receive two auction end notices from Gixen, though, and that prompted me to check previous emails.

For the auction where I had the authorization problem, I did *not* receive any auction end notices, which again leads me to think that Gixen did not place the snipe.
