Over years of membership and use on restricted items I know there have been glitches sometimes. New one today, the following gibberish appears:

"Please sign in to purchase items from _____ Only listings -- _____ Only listings cannot be purchased through API, Please visit eBay.com. Due to eBay's restrictions on viewing and purchasing items from the _____ Only category, we need to verify that y "

Yes, that's how it ends. Rolling Eyes OC it includes the naughty five letter word that iirc we are not allowed to say here. Is this error not known to Gix until the attempt to bid is made. ? If I had notice when I scheduled I would have bid manually.

Welp it's obviously an ad-ult only, age restricted category - apparently a category eBay is not allowing to be sniped with the eBay API gixen now uses. It did require an extra step of "agreeing" I was over the age of 18 just to view the item at eBay.

You were supposed to get a warning: "Unfortunately, at the moment you cannot place bids for adult listings via Gixen, only directly on eBay."

If you didn't - can you please let me know the details? Item number would help me the most. Email me if you don't want it posted here.

Rick,

Did you use the web interface, mobile web interface or desktop manager to enter this? I wonder if you were shown a warning or not.

In order to see wazzup I looked at the item number with Opera web browser. I was already signed in to eBay, and received the "18 and over" warning page that I had to agree to before I could view the item.

From the UK, I can't view this item even if I do indicate I'm over 18...

You are not allowed to access this page

Sorry, you are not allowed to view, sell, bid on or purchase items in the Adult Only category.
Due to restrictions regarding the sale of pornography over the internet, access to listings in the Adult Only category has been restricted. Continue shopping or return to your most recent search.
eBay restricts access to the Adult Only category because of laws in various countries that govern the sale of pornography over the internet. Many of these laws are more restrictive than those in the US, others are less clearly defined.

eBay has implemented this policy in an effort to protect our members from undue legal risk and to promote respect for the laws of other countries that regulate mature audience content. See more information about this policy.

Perhaps only ukidnme$ (the OP) will be able to answer the question about which interface was used to enter the original snipe.

That's odd. You made me look: I checked my eBay information to see if there was a required date of birth field in account settings and I don't see any such thing. I was thinking maybe you had a blank field for that info on your account Mark but I don't see any DOB requirement in account settings.

I know this is getting kind of silly but similar blocks may impact other restricted merchandise categories.

I suspect it's being blocked via the location associated with my IP address.

Are you using a computer located in the US, or alternatively accessing Ebay via a VPN or Proxy server hosted in the US ?

OK, I ignored this for a few days. There seems to be a lot of naivete here re this class of items (which we cannot even use the simple name for.) Maybe that is the bigger answer to me. Although at least once before there was an almost identical prob Mario investigated and fixed (or maybe it just went away. ?)

I have been bidding/sniping on these items for 18 years, before gix, then often using it. Always a PC, in USA. I don't know how it is on mobile, or if it is now different than it was before recent changes. On PC it is (and always was) very simple to "qualify". There is an entry page and a button to "confirm". It is really assent to terms, no info required or entered.

Ebay has always limited permission to USA & Canada. That has never changed. If you are outside trying to investigate this I don't see how you can. Unless you have special entry.

It seems root of problems is Ebay trying to accommodate mobile devices. Earlier in 2017 I was using w/o problem. Now, more accommodation by "API". Why should gix be afflicted with this change? You cannot use gix to get around restriction. If you have not already viewed the item legit, you don't the #, or what to bid on.

IOW, there may be tech explanation, but it is not a legit excuse or reason.

But that is exactly what did change since early 2017 - gixen now uses the eBay API to interface with the site. And there may be a new inhereent issue using that API regarding restricted categories that require an extra confirmation page in order to access the item. Use of the eBay API would be a legit reason in context of the improved bididng reliability for everything else but this category. It's not an excuse - it's just the way eBay works. Only Mario can answer this one.

I think Rick is right, when Mario posted this above:

He indicated that he was aware that this issue was re-introduced with the change to the way Gixen sends your bid to Ebay, back in June/July of last year.

Correct, previous to the last August change Gixen was using web scraping, as have all the other sniping services. It was slightly more complicated to implement bidding on adult listings (due to additional screen), but it was possible. Now, while the change of the way Gixen interfaces with eBay has brought great benefits in terms of reliability and support, adult listings are a victim of this change.

I opened a ticket with eBay to address the issue, and they are aware of it, however this has been quite a while ago, and I don't see it fixed yet. I am guessing there is some legal difficulty in doing so.

Mad It happened to me as well. I had snipes on over 30 items, all magazines in the Everything Else category. When the auctions closed I got Error Messages on all the snipe attempts, listing the restriction for that category for API on Bidnapper. I had to sign in to the individual items and place bids manually too late for over half that closed without any bids on them.

Do you mean Gixen, or are you slating the competition for not having warned you prior to the auction ending ?

That's an example of a much more expensive service for Ebay sniping.
