Looks like I finally ran into a bid increment-derived loss, that others have reported before. Item #220504562422, I bid $3.29, but yet the winning bidder won with only $3.10!

What was the solution to avoiding this problem? Did it have something to do with not setting the offset time too low? Or is it just something you can't get away from?

Well, the winning bid was placed 7 seconds before the end of the auction, so anything less than 6 seconds offset was going to result in eBay rejecting your bid, if however you had chosen an offset greater than 7 seconds then your bid would have been accepted and the other bid would have been rejected when they tried to place it.

So in a long winded way, I'm just agreeing with you, a larger offset would have won you the auction... which is why I always go for an offset greater than the default (6 seconds) on at least one of the servers, for precisely this situation.

This only comes up if you're trying to win this with a hair-thin margin. Another approach would be to simply bid more. Of course, then it costs more to win...
