Ok, so what what I understand, Gixen just throws a maximum bid at the last few seconds at ebay, then proxy bidding takes over. So wouldn't this mean there'll be a heap of incremental bids until it hits your limit and you either win OR you lose by being outbid because your max wasn't high enough?

I've lost two auctions (didn't bid high enough, not complaining about that) but in the auction history I see:

private listing - bidders' identities protected US $15.50
20-Jun-09 03:17:24 AEST

yuakaza( 7 ) US $15.00
20-Jun-09 03:17:27 AEST

private listing - bidders' identities protected US $8.00
20-Jun-09 03:17:02 AEST

private listing - bidders' identities protected US $7.08
20-Jun-09 03:15:44 AEST

private listing - bidders' identities protected US $4.88
20-Jun-09 03:16:46 AEST

private listing - bidders' identities protected US $4.08
20-Jun-09 03:16:32 AEST

private listing - bidders' identities protected US $3.08
20-Jun-09 03:14:18 AEST

private listing - bidders' identities protected US $2.08
20-Jun-09 01:56:45 AEST

private listing - bidders' identities protected US $1.04
20-Jun-09 03:13:30 AEST

private listing - bidders' identities protected US $0.99
18-Jun-09 13:59:10 AEST

Starting Price US $0.99
13-Jun-09 03:17:33 AEST

So I apparently bid the whole $15 (my max) from the get-go? Shouldn't it be bidding incrementally? Or have I missed something? Sorry, i'm still all new to this. Embarassed

eBay's proxy bidding system updates the current price (also called "winning bid") to be at most one bid increment greater than the second-highest bid. Since someone bid at least $15.50 three seconds before you bid, your bid was immediately displayed at its full value of $15.00 and the winning bidder won for one increment more, namely $15.50.

Here's what the bid history would have looked like if the winning bidder had not bid:

yuakaza( 7 ) US $8.50
20-Jun-09 03:17:27 AEST

private listing - bidders' identities protected US $8.00
20-Jun-09 03:17:02 AEST

private listing - bidders' identities protected US $7.08
20-Jun-09 03:15:44 AEST

private listing - bidders' identities protected US $4.88
20-Jun-09 03:16:46 AEST

private listing - bidders' identities protected US $4.08
20-Jun-09 03:16:32 AEST

private listing - bidders' identities protected US $3.08
20-Jun-09 03:14:18 AEST

private listing - bidders' identities protected US $2.08
20-Jun-09 01:56:45 AEST

private listing - bidders' identities protected US $1.04
20-Jun-09 03:13:30 AEST

private listing - bidders' identities protected US $0.99
18-Jun-09 13:59:10 AEST

Starting Price US $0.99
13-Jun-09 03:17:33 AEST

This must have been what you expected, but that other bid spoiled it.

Ah ok, so that would've happened had I set a higher maximum that the other guy. So ebay'll just dump the last bid at the end?
Thanks for clearing that up. Smile

I'm not quite sure what you meant by that would've happened had I set a higher maximum than the other guy. The theoretical bid history I posted was what it would have looked like if that other guy hadn't bid: you would have won for only $8.50 even though you had bid $15.00 and no one else would have known that you bid $15.00. The same principle would have applied had you bid more than the other guy: his actual bid would have been displayed at its full value and you would have one for a bid increment more.
