That's an important observation. If everybody bidding on eBay auctions took the advice given by eBay to bid once with their maximum, then sniping would be irrelevant. Sure, using a sniping service protects your bid from being exposed to nibbling and shilling, but it also forces you to carefully decide ahead of time how much you are willing to pay and to bid that amount just once; that is, using a sniping service teaches you to bid properly.
