Paid for the mirror service since last year, everything went OK until today, when I lost an auction without any reason and with the double result of 'Unknown Error'

The auction was n.
391852439788

During compiling the list of auctions to snipes I push on Import Watch List button. I then notice that some items records were duplicated but, clicking on editing on one of them (this one) and clicking on 'modify' to confirm the bid the double record disappeared, leaving onlly one with the right amount.
This is the copy of what is left after:

391852439788

MASTRO DE PAJA 1979th. GIANCARLO GUIDI ERA, STRAIGHT GRAINED BRIAR, STUNNING ! (by pipesonrattan (1127))

View Item Description

S&H: 15.0 USD (View Shipping Information)

Offset: 3

ENDED

226.89

102.50 USD

Unknown Error. Unknown Error.

Thanks

I agree that error is not helping you to understand what caused the issue.

Mario may be able to extract more information from the logs on the servers.

For a more speedy response, than you may get here, please email him direct at the support address on the Contact tab above, and please reference both this thread (so that he can answer here as well as via email), and include both your Gixen and Ebay ids.

Followed your suggestion nearly immediately, a couple of hours ago. Could be the lag, or the period of the year, I got no answer yet.
Patiently waiting, hope the problem doesn't appear again in the next auctions.

By the way I checked the line in the Gixen Desktop Manager, and it appears that the problem was at the main server level, as the status of the Server was a double 'Unknown error', while the status of the mirror was a laconic 'Auction ended'

Thanks a lot.

My best guess for an error of 'Auction ended' is that Gixen was late submitting the bid, on that server, at that time.

These errors are one of the things that has been upgraded recently though, so I'm a bit out of touch with what they all mean, right now... but it is becoming more clear as we go forward.

This "Unknown error" seems to be an eBay issue. It is being looked at, as I already reported a few that are similar.

Any news from the people 'looking at it'?

Because I just spoke with the Seller, and he is upset like me, if not more: after all he would have sold that item at a double price if compared to the 'winning one', no matter my bid winning on not, if the system worked properly...

Thanks

Roberto,

Please have patience on this, it isn't entirely in Mario's control, since we are, most likely, trying to get a response from individuals that don't work for or even necessarily have any contractual relationship with Gixen.

This will indeed take a while, someone has to debug this issue. We are probably talking weeks.

I see.

Well thanks, and sorry for 'my impatience'.
No idea of how much time it takes, considering the case is not in your hands, and this I can understand with no difficulty.

On the other side of the story I'm sure you understand I would like to bid with the same Seller to possibly win other auctions.
If I doubt that there is some kind of systematic problem with the Seller, the sniping system or eBay in general, I'd rather bid manually or use another sniper.

And finally I'm sure also you understand that the Seller himself is not so happy, to use a polite euphemism, at the idea that there is people out there bidding on his items and he doesn't get the best bid because there's a glitch in the system, somewhere...

Thanks Mario for your reply and interest in the case. I really appreciate that.

Thanks for your polite and understanding post.

Here are my thoughts. I hope you find them useful.

Over on another post, Mario provided us with the following statistics:

Code:
To re-affirm - number of failed snipes (excluding account issues) has dropped 5-fold at least, and is now approximately at 1 in 1000. The last I looked it was 7 late snipes out of 6,990 sent.

And this is with main server only. With mirror I yet have to see a (non-account related) failure at all.

Given this, I would recommend trying the mirror service for only $6 per year. (You could, of course, snipe manually.) Since this "unknown error" is not a Gixen error, you might very well run into it if you use another sniping service.

Notice that the free Gixen service has failed only about 0.001% (7 out of 6,990) of the time. If that failure rate is too high in comparison to the importance of the item you're bidding on, then manually bidding or signing up for the Gixen mirror service are your best options, in my opinion.

Another thing we should perhaps take into consideration when we have issues raised here; when I last looked at the Home page:

Code:
Gixen Statistics
Users with pending snipes: 6,009
Pending snipes: 29,237

So the service isn't doing badly for it's many users, otherwise we would be seeing a lot more activity here.

I acknowledge that doesn't help if you are one, of the few, that does have an issue, but I think it still provides a perspective on the overall situation.

This is true - and this 6,000 is just at one point in time. For example, since transition was started a few weeks ago, some 28,000 users used Gixen. When there is a real problem that lasts only a few hours, it takes me a day to respond to all the emails.

And transition had its share of problems, no doubt. It was well worth it though.

To juangrande:

I bought the mirror service (the $6 you are talking about), if you read my first post you'll see I said that.

So probably I'm the first...

Thanks

Whoops. You're right. I apparently missed that, even though it was the first thing you said in your original message. Embarassed

Hopefully, Mario will get the chance to look at this soon, and you may indeed have the dubious honor of being the first to see a failed bid using the mirror service.

Roberto,

While the difference is subtle and no consolation, it wasn't Gixen that failed you here, this is some problem on eBay's side. I am also still waiting to hear what it was and if the problem is fixed. They take a bit longer to investigate.

Sorry, Mario. You had explained that this was an eBay error earlier in the thread.

I'll go to my room and sit in the corner now. Embarassed

I'll renew the mirror subscription in about one month, for sure Cool

Anyway... 'a bit longer'... was one month ago, right?

From time to time I come back and check if there are any news.

Thanks Mario

Mander2017,

Thank you for the reminder.

Is this issue persistent on your account ?...

By which I mean do all snipes that you set up fail in exactly this way ?
