Here is the relevant part of the bid history.

Code:

   Bidder      Bid Amount      Bid Time
   ------      ----------      --------
   t***e      US $59.00      Dec-25-09 14:06:12 PST
   n***a      US $58.55      Dec-25-09 14:06:23 PST
   i***o      US $56.00      Dec-25-09 07:18:57 PST
   r***a      US $55.99      Dec-25-09 14:05:58 PST
   r***a      US $52.99      Dec-25-09 14:05:43 PST
   i***o      US $51.00      Dec-24-09 23:32:57 PST
   s***g      US $50.00      Dec-25-09 14:00:08 PST
   e***d      US $45.00      Dec-24-09 11:39:53 PST
   i***o      US $41.00      Dec-24-09 22:13:46 PST

Notice that the winning bid was placed earlier (14:06:12) than the 2nd-highest bid (14:06:23). Before n***a bid, t***e was winning with the showing bid at $57.00. When n***a bid $58.55, t***e's bid of $59.00 became the winning bid: we know it is the exact bid since it is less than an increment ($1.00) more than $58.55.

There is no limit to the number of bids eBay will accept, and valid bids are accepted right up until the auction ends (including the last second).

Item 160389283658.

The winning bid not a increment more than 58.55. Ebay takes all the bids in the last N seconds and picks the highest. I thought N will be about 10. But looking at this case it seems like atleast 15.
