The bid increment applies to the current auction price not to the current highest bid (which you do not know until it is outbid). I think this is the source of your confusion.

I suppose this is only for bids previously placed.

The bid increment in that range is $25. Please see http://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/bid-increments.html#how and you will understand.

I didn't get it despite the fact that my limit was superior to the winning bid.
