The way Ebay works is that the highest accepted bid always wins.

However, when that bid is more than a bid increment more than the next highest bid Ebay only makes the winner pay one bid increment more than that losing bid.

So when you are the second highest bidder the most common outcome is that the winner pays just a bit more than you were willing to pay.

It's not an indication that the winner was only willing to pay that much, or indeed that they bid anywhere near as low as that amount, their winning bid could have been much higher than yours. They just don't need to pay as much as they might have had to if there been any other bids, higher than yours.

So to summarise, the short answer is that, this is just how Ebay works.

Item 233728536233 I snipe with odd $ amounts. I am constantly outbid by an amount that seems to be a minimum bump above my snipe. On this one my snipe was 463.17. Winning bid was 468.17. This happens to me again and again and I'd like to know why and how.
